Eye serum and face serum can contain similar ingredient categories, but they are formulated for different areas. The eye area is thinner, more mobile and often more sensitive, so texture, concentration and tolerability become especially important.
What is an eye serum?
Eye serums are usually lightweight formulas intended for the orbital area. Depending on the product, they may target fine lines, dryness, puffiness or uneven-looking tone.
Can you use face serum around the eyes?
Only if the manufacturer indicates that the formula is suitable for the eye area. A face serum can contain acids, retinoids, fragrances or other ingredients at levels that may be uncomfortable close to the eyes.
When a dedicated eye serum makes sense
- You want a lighter texture than an eye cream.
- You are targeting a specific eye-area concern.
- Your facial serum is not intended for use around the eyes.
- You prefer a formula tested and labeled specifically for that area.

The label matters less than the finished formulation. Choose based on intended area of use, ingredients, texture and tolerability. More active ingredients are not automatically better around the eyes.
How to layer
Apply eye serum after cleansing and before a heavier eye cream if both are used. In the morning, finish the facial routine with sunscreen and use sun-protective habits around the eye area as well.
