Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) are water-soluble exfoliating acids commonly used to improve the appearance of dullness, rough texture and uneven tone. Glycolic acid and lactic acid are two of the best-known examples.
How AHAs work
AHAs help loosen the bonds between surface skin cells, supporting more even shedding of the outermost layer. With appropriate use, this can make the skin feel smoother and look brighter.
What can AHAs help with?
- Rough or uneven surface texture.
- Dull-looking skin.
- The appearance of some superficial discoloration.
- Fine surface lines related to texture and photoaging.

How often should you use an AHA?
Frequency depends on acid type, concentration, pH, the complete formula and your skin. Start according to the product directions and avoid adding several exfoliating products at once. More frequent exfoliation is not automatically more effective.
AHAs and sun sensitivity
AHAs can increase sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation while they are being used. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen and sensible sun protection are therefore important. Browse Sunscreens.
Can AHAs be combined with retinol?
Some experienced users tolerate both in one overall regimen, but combining them can also increase irritation. A simple approach is to introduce one active at a time and separate use if the skin becomes dry or reactive.
When to stop
Brief mild tingling can occur with some acid products, but persistent burning, marked redness, swelling or ongoing irritation is a reason to stop and allow the skin barrier to recover.
