What each texture does
Gel and foam cleansers rinse easily and often suit people who prefer a fresh finish; mild formulas can work for many skin types. Cleansing milk or cream usually feels more cushioning and may suit dry or sensitive skin. Cleansing oil or balm is useful for dissolving long-wear makeup and water-resistant sunscreen.
Texture alone does not determine gentleness. Surfactants, fragrance, contact time, water temperature and frequency matter.
One cleanse or two
One suitable cleanser is enough for many evenings. Double cleansing is optional when makeup or a persistent sunscreen film is difficult to remove: use oil or balm first and a mild water-based cleanser second.
If two steps leave the skin tight, flaky or burning, simplify. Morning cleansing can also be lighter than evening cleansing.
How to judge the result
After washing, skin should feel clean but not markedly tight or “squeaky.” Choose based on today’s skin condition, not only a fixed label such as oily or dry.
Persistent itching, redness or scaling may indicate dermatitis rather than the wrong cleanser and deserves professional assessment.
